Town Meeting Approves Renewable Overlay District Expansion

Posted on June 1, 2015 at 11:11 AM by Lara Curtis

On Thursday, May 28th, Town Meeting unanimously supported a zoning amendment to expand the Renewable Energy Overlay (SOL) District to include the Transfer Station at 813, 815 and 817 Newton Street. This vote opens the way for the construction of a 1.4 MW carport solar facility on the parking and materials storage area at the Transfer Station, which could generate approximately 1.6 million kilowatt hours of electricity, the equivalent of powering over 100 homes a year.
Next steps include signing a contract with Blue Wave Capital for not only the Transfer Station solar facility, but also for a number of other solar facilities to be installed on Singletree Hill Reservoir and building roofs. Also, final plans for the Transfer Station and Singletree Hill Reservoir solar installations will need to be developed and reviewed by the Planning Board. More to come!
